Quite a hardy palm, originating from the deserts of Mexico, where the night time temperatures regularly drop below freezing. Silver-blue fronds arch from the crown of this graceful palm. Over time the fronds die back forming a rough, thick, grey-brown trunk.

Impressive sturdy palm with arching, feathery, blue- grey fronds. The dying back frond stems add height and thickness to the rough, grey trunk.

Hardier than first thought and worth trying outside all year round in a sunny, sheltered spot.

This is, unusually, a rather bushy palm that, over time, develops numerous stems from the base. The stiff fronds are blue-green in colour with sharp barbs along the stems.

AUSTRALIAN SAGO

Grass-green fronds sprout from the crown, sometimes only one or two a year, sometimes as many as 20. The fronds die back eventually forming a trunk up to 12ft tall.

The pineapple-like trunk supports a crown of dark green, glossy fronds that can reach up to 1metre in length. Each one is made up of rigid narrow leaflets.

Details:

Very slow growing but after 50-100 years, the trunk can reach 20ft or more.

Quite tender when young.

Worth trying mature plants outside all year round in a sheltered location and with some frost protection.

Dioon Edule

Very attractive, graceful Cycad. It produces a rosette of arching, waxy, blue-green fronds from the crown. Each frond is spine tipped and can reach up to 4ft in length.

Very slow growing but will eventually form a trunk.

Very tender so must be over-wintered inside.

Each frond is made up of many leaflets. In younger plants the fronds are quite rigid. Mature plants have a more graceful, arching appearance. The fronds die back over time forming a rough, grey-brown trunk.

Very hardy palm, usually single trunked. The entire trunk is covered in coarse shaggy hair. At the end of horny-toothed stems are the fanned, deeply cut fronds.
