Bananas

MUSA BALBISIANA

Extremely fast growing banana. The large green leaves have a blue-tinged underside, and can reach up to 7ft in length.

Details:

Height: 12-15ft or more

Larger specimens can tolerate cool conditions but they should be over-wintered indoors.

Needs plenty of water.

HARDY JAPANESE BANANA

Musa Basjoo

Very fast growing banana that can produce a 8-10 Ft vivid green leaf in a week. The thick, fibrous trunk can reach 20ft tall. We have had these produce fruit over the last two years. Although it is not edible, a definate talking point for visitors to your garden.

Details:

Frost will destroy foliage but protect the trunk with fleece and it will grow again.

Needs lots of water in the summer months.

FRUITING PYGMY BANANA

Musa Cavendishii

An amazing banana that can produce edible fruit.

Details:

Height: 4-6ft

Likes dappled shade in a large pot.

Needs plenty of water and a weekly feed during growing season.

Over-winter inside.

YUNNAN BANANA

Musa Itinerans

Fast growing banana with a slender chocolate coloured trunk. Large, bright green leaves with waxy, bluish stalks. Originating from the Yunnan province in China, this banana takes a regular covering of snow.

Details:

Height: 10ft or more

Should be as hardy as "Basjoo" as long as it is fleeced.

Needs regular feeding and plenty of water during growing season.

DARJEELING BANANA

Musa Sikkimensis

Huge green leaves with irregular maroon mottling and a deep purple mid-rib.

Details:

The trunk can reach up to 15ft tall and 18ins round.

Not quite as hardy as "Basjoo" but should survive outside with a protection of fleece.

Water well during growing season.

Likes sun to shade.

‘RED TIGER’

Musa Sikkimensis

Very similar to the standard Sikkimensis but has guaranteed red stripes on the huge green leaves.

Details:

The fleshy trunk can reach up to about 12ft tall and 18ins round.

Protect same as "Basjoo".

Water well.

Sun to partial shade.

DWARF PINK BANANA

Musa Velutina

A dwarf banana with waxy green leaves with pink mid- rib. The pink-orange flowers are followed by small, bright pink, velvety bananas. These are supposed to be edible but we don’t advise it.

Details:

Height: 4-5ft or more

Protect from all frost.

BLOOD BANANA

Musa Zebrina

Beautiful banana with mottled maroon and green leaves. The fleshy green stem is usually tinged with red markings. A colourful addition to any garden, but must be over-wintered indoors.

Details:

Height: 6ft or more

Sun to shade.

Water well if kept in a container.

CHINESE YELLOW BANANA

Musella Lasiocarpa

Very short, conical trunk with a crown of thick, glaucous leaves. The flower forms in the crown but the plant then dies, leaving behind many suckers.

Details:

Height: to about 5ft

Sun to shade.

Protect from frost.

SNOW BANANA

Ensete Glaucum

Extremely fast growing banana with a thick, waxy, blue-green trunk. The large glaucous leaves can reach up to 10ft in length.

Details:

Height: 10-15ft

Needs plenty of water and fertile soil.

Full sun to partial shade.

Not hardy so protect from all frost.

ABYSSINIAN BANANA

Ensete Ventricosum

The large, paddle-like, green leaves have a maroon mid-rib and can reach 4ft or more in length. The fleshy, thick trunk swells at the base with age.

Details:

Height: 12ft or more

Needs lots of water and fertile soil.

Over-winter inside.

RED ABYSSINIAN BANANA

Ensete Ventricosum Maurelli

One of our personal favourites. Great ornamental banana to give a sub-tropical look. Good mixed with other exotics or on its own as a center piece. Maroon leaves up to 6ft long and 18ins wide sprout from the stocky burgundy trunk. Fast growing.

Details:

Height: to about 12ft

Needs lots of water.

Over-winter inside.
